Patentstyret Open Data MCP Server

Access Norwegian trademark, patent and design information from your AI assistant.

The Patentstyret Open Data MCP server enables compatible AI applications to search public records, retrieve case details and explore companies’ intellectual property portfolios.

All tools perform read-only lookups. They do not submit applications or modify records.

Connect to the server

There are two alternatives to configure your MCP client:

a) Authenticate using HTTP Header (recommended)

b) Authenticate using URL with key

Some AI Assistants do not allow authenticating using HTTP headers.

Once connected, your client can discover the available tools and their input parameters.

Available tools

Getting started

Describe what you want to find in your AI assistant. For example:

  • “Search for Norwegian trademarks containing FJORDLYS and show the status of relevant results.”

  • “Find patent applications where Example AS is the applicant.”

  • “Find registered designs associated with Example AS.”

  • “Show the intellectual property portfolio for the company with Norwegian organisation number [9-digit number].”

A typical workflow is to search for cases, identify relevant results and retrieve their full records using the corresponding lookup tool.

Trademarks

search_trademarks

Search trademark applications and registrations held by Patentstyret.

Use this tool to find a word or brand name, or to identify trademarks associated with a company or person.

Search results contain summaries. Filters combine with AND: a result must satisfy all of them. Use the application number from a relevant result with get_trademark to retrieve further details.

get_trademark

Retrieve a trademark case using its application number.

The record includes trademark text and type, current legal status and status dates, applicant and owner information, Nice classes with goods and services, priority claims and publication history.

Use this tool to check the recorded status and the goods and services covered by a trademark.

Interpreting trademark results

No matching results does not establish that a name is available to use or register. Consider similar names and spellings, relevant national and international records, and company names. The tools described here do not provide a complete clearance search or a legal assessment of likelihood of confusion.

Patents

search_patents

Search Norwegian patent applications and granted patents held by Patentstyret.

This search does not cover titles, keywords or technical classification.

get_patent

Retrieve a patent case using the application number returned by search_patents.

The record includes title, applicant and owner information, inventors, filing and priority data, legal status and status history, IPC/CPC classifications and publication data.

Designs

search_designs

Search Norwegian registered industrial designs held by Patentstyret.

get_design

Retrieve a design case using the application number returned by search_designs.

The record includes product indication, Locarno classes, applicant and owner information, designer, legal status and status history, priority and publication data.

Company portfolios

get_ipr_cases_by_company

Find trademark, patent and design cases where a company is listed as an applicant or owner.

Provide the organisation number, the name, or both. For cases that are or have been granted, the company must be listed in the owner role to match.

Use the returned application numbers with get_trademark, get_patent or get_design to retrieve individual case details.

Data and responsibility

The data comes from Patentstyret's Open Data API and is provided as is. It may be incomplete, delayed or contain errors. Only the official register at search.patentstyret.no is authoritative — verify there anything you intend to rely on.

Responses are trimmed for use by AI assistants: empty fields are removed, address details are omitted, and very long lists are cut short with a marker. Use the REST API under APIs when you need complete records.

Nothing these tools return is legal advice, and no result is a clearance search. Whether a trademark, patent or design is available, valid or infringed requires professional assessment. Patentstyret is not responsible for how AI systems interpret, summarise or act on this data.
